Did you know that even the slightest inclination towards the study of Astrology makes you a Poet?

The most basic definition of “poet” is a person who writes poems. But writing is only a sliver of what the poet actually does. Simply put, a poet’s job is to notice the intricacies of the world around them. In noticing the complexities of our existence, Poets discover meaning, and even beauty, in mundanity. More importantly, they allow us to see that our mundanity is meaningful. As Robin Williams says in The Dead Poets Society: “Poetry, beauty, romance, love—these are what we stay alive for.”

Astrologers are also Poets. Even the slightest inclination towards the study of Astrology also makes you a Poet. You may counter my statement, saying that you failed Literature class, and that you couldn’t even recite “Mary Had A Little Lamb,” much less write the thing. And even so, I am sure that your propensity for Astrology makes you a Poet.

Like the Poet, it’s also the Astrologer’s job to notice meaningful details of everyday life that the average eye glances over. An Astrology student will be tasked with taking in the world through a different lens than ordinary society has taught them to. (And, as a Poet, you’re probably already doing this without even knowing). Astrologers tune into the movements of planets, who solely speak in the language of symbolism, metaphor, and mythos. In order to truly be in conversation with the planets, you gotta speak their language. Planetary language is—you guessed it—Poetic language.

In Poet’s Astrology school, you will learn the poetic language of the universe. By the end of the semester, you will be able to “speak” the language of the planets. My course is unique because of the spaciousness I have created within the syllabus. Most introductory Astrology courses attempt the impossible: learn a concept (signs, planets, and/or houses) in just a few hours.

In our semester, we will have the gift of sitting with, chewing on, marinating with, and meditating on these fundamental astrological concepts. Here, we are able to give ourselves time and breathing room to go in-depth with these concepts, and get to know them as new friends, instead of rushing towards surface level understanding. Remember: there is nothing surface level from the viewpoint of a Poet.

About Mal’s Teaching Style

I am a Hellenistic Astrologer. This means that I use the tradition of Hellenistic Astrology as the basis of my client work and teachings. Hellenistic astrology was originally practiced from the 1st century BCE until the seventh century CE. All the astrology stuff we know and love today originates from this tradition.

Trust me when I say this: you’ll want to learn the traditional fundamentals first, which is exactly what we will be doing together during this 6-month semester. It’s my opinion that spending time with the traditional fundamentals will assure that you have a very solid, structural base for all other Astrology studies you may embark on in the future.  If you had no idea there was more than one branch of Astrology, and do not know what is different about Hellenistic Astrology vs. “other” types of Astrology—no worries. This will become more clear with time!

🌀Some of you may want to know more about my astrological education. You can read more about my astrology education background here.

Sparknotes | This semester will include:

  • Deep dive into the Hellenistic fundamentals (Houses, Planets, Signs, Aspects)

  • Learning the bones of essential dignities

  • Overview of astrological history

  • Introductory chart analysis (AKA—understanding your own chart, as well as others’, and how to put it all together)

  • The poetry, personal discovery, parts-work, and inner healing that come along with embarking on this study

  • Access to a growing community of curious souls and Astrology students

The Logistics

The Chicago Cohort is a In-Person & Virtual Hybrid Class. We meet once a week, either Tuesdays (in person) or Wednesdays (online), depending on the week. On the Tuesdays we are scheduled to meet in person, we will gather at Mal’s house in Logan Square. See below for dates. Time is always 6:30-8:30pm central. Keep in mind that this is a cat household. If you are allergic to cats, you may want to opt for the Online Cohort instead.

The parallel Online Cohort will meet virtually over Zoom on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30pm central. Join from anywhere in the world! Both cohorts meet about three times per month & follow the same syllabus. Chicago students have access to the recordings of the online classes as well. All students will be in cahoots via the Discord app.

See below for the official dates! Semester is September 2024 through February 2025.

Sliding Scale Tuition Rates

Price exchange for enrollment is sliding scale $75-$150 per month; you get to assess where you land on that scale.

In general, if you are able to afford basic costs of living, health insurance, vacations, etc. — veer towards the higher end of the scale! If basic costs of living are often a challenge, veer towards the lower end of the scale. If you are somewhere in the middle… you guessed it, choose a price in the middle!

You do NOT need to explain or justify your financial situation to me. I trust that you value my work & will exchange what you are honestly able to!

A limited number of even lower, needs-based scholarships are available. Please contact me for more info.
